Foods to Never Eat #1. Aspartame

Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, used as a sugar substitute to fool you into thinking certain foods or drinks are healthier than their counterpart (e.g., Coke vs. Diet Coke). Even dairy organizations have petitioned for milk to contain aspartame to keep up with our nation’s sugar addiction. Items that are labeled “low-calorie” or “sugar- free,” and “diet” drinks are some of the most prominent places for aspartame. This faux sugar has been linked to migraines, visual changes, seizures, depression, obesity, and brain cancer. Common aspartame products are:

  • Equal®

  • Low-calorie and sugar-free drinks

Canned food exposes people to dangerous levels of bisphenol A (BPA), a hormone-disrupting chemical that mimics estrogen. BPA resides in the thin plastic coating in cans that keeps food “fresh.” This health altering chemical has been linked to childhood aggression, obesity, heart disease, changes in breast tissue, and reproductive health problems.

Canned foods also are high in preservatives — added chemicals to, once again, keep food “fresh.” Reason being, the majority of canned food is picked before it is ripe in order to make sure it is at its peak when canned for your enjoyment. Canned foods are typically cheap, which lures consumers, but are high in either sugar (real and fake) or sodium, depending on the content.

Sugar is thine enemy. The average American consumes between 150 – 170 pounds of sugar a year. This delicious natural and added compound makes everything that much better to eat. But on the other side of sugar lies a weakened immune system, inflammation, obesity, and diabetes. Sugar is placed in products to create an addiction. And even when sugar was revealed to be an enemy, sugar replacements, such as fructose and aspartame, were introduced to trick consumers and keep the for-profit addiction going.

Sugar (sucrose) is often found in GMO sugar beets. Sucrose breaks down into two simple sugars: glucose and fructose. Glucose can be utilized by every cell in the body as energy but fructose can’t. In fact, fructose can only be metabolized by the liver which is fine when you eat a moderate amount of fructose and the extra is converted to glycogen and stored for later use. But when you eat too much fructose it’s turned into fat instead, causing weight gain and other issues like cancer. It’s best to use raw honey or coconut sugar instead of refined sugar as much as possible. But at the end of the day, sugar is sugar and we all need to eat less of it. Try to keep your overall sugar intake under 28 grams a day (including fruit).

GMOs are plants or animals that have had their DNA modified (not hybridized, which could happen in nature). In the United States, the majority of the corn, soybean, cotton, and canola crops are now genetically modified. One or more of these is present in almost every processed food available. There have been no long term studies to prove consuming GMOs safe. Many GMOs are modified to be insecticides by injecting Bt genes. Bt has been shown to persist in the gut, potentially causing leaky gut syndrome. It’s also been shown to have a toxic effect on the lungs and other organs. 

Further, a study with 200 rats fed a Monsanto corn variety led to rodents developing several enormous tumors at an increased growth of 200 to 300 percent. The corn variety, NK603, was modified to make it resistant to glyphosate, an herbicide sold under the well known name “Roundup.”

Opt for non-GMO (usually non-GMO label), organic, and local goods over “store” brands.

Foods to Never Eat #6. High-Fructose Corn Syrup

While we’re talking about sweets, let’s consider refined sugar. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is almost always the sweetener of choice in processed foods and drinks. Because it enters the bloodstream immediately and contains high amounts of fructose which can only be processed by the liver, it contributes to heart disease and metabolic issues such as insulin resistance and diabetes.

Most high-fructose comes from GMO corn, making it part of the Monsanto and Big Ag circle of consumer control. Common foods and drinks with high-fructose corn syrup are:

  • Soda
  • Candy
  • Sweetened yogurt
  • Salad dressing
  • Juice
  • Canned fruit
  • Cereal
  • Granola bar
  • Sauces and condiments

Milk alternatives, such as non-dairy creamers (powdered and liquid), are full of added sugars and preservatives. Additionally, they contain carrageenan, a thickener that is a known to cause inflammation, cancer, leaky gut, and diabetes. Inflammation is the onset for many diseases and wreaks havoc on the body. Foods reported to contain carrageenan are:

  • Coffee creamer

Foods to Never Eat #8. Processed Foods

Processed foods offer no nutritional value. Instead, they provide harmful chemicals, high-fructose corn syrup, and artificial ingredients which weaken the immune system and promote diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Processed foods also have a slew of added sugars and high-fructose corn syrup which can weaken our immune systems and promote disease. Common processed foods are:

Trans fats cause tens of thousands of premature heart disease deaths each year. If you check the ingredients list and see “partially hydrogenated,” “fractionated,” or “hydrogenated,” put it back. Foods containing trans fats are:

  • Margarine

  • Donuts
  • Fried fast food
  • Frozen pizza

Use coconut oil, olive oil, grass-fed butter, or ghee in your cooking.

Plastic bottles contain harmful chemicals such as the carcinogen di-2-ethylhexyl-adipate (DEHA) and bisphenol-A (BPA), a known endocrine disruptor. Even worse, if the plastic is heated in anyway, the plastics can release harmful gas directly directly into the liquid.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is one of the most toxic food  additives you can eat. MSG is used to enhance the flavor of processed food since its flavor (and nutrition) has been removed from overcooking. Except MSG doesn’t actually change the food, but rather makes your taste buds overreact to the food, making it seem to taste better.

MSG overexcites your neurons, causing inflammation, brain damage, abnormal hormone fluctuations, and nervous system disorders. Other reactions include headaches, nausea, weakness, a burning sensation in the back of neck and forearms, wheezing or difficulty in breathing, and changes in heart rate, pulse rate, and/or heart palpitation. Even if you don’t seem to have a reaction to MSG right now, you may in the future. According to Dr. Russell Blaylock, who wrote a book on the subject called Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills sensitivity to MSG builds up in our bodies until it reaches our “threshold of sensitivity.”

MSG may be hidden in:

  • Infant formula
  • Low-fat or fat-free dairy
  • Over-the-counter medications (especially children’s) and prescription drugs
  • Protein powder
  • Organic processed foods and kosher food
  • IV fluids given in hospitals
  • The chicken pox vaccine (and possibly other live virus vaccines)

In order to cut out MSG from your diet, you will need to remove foods with the following ingredients in their label: monosodium glutamate, free glutamate, hydrolyzed proteins (any type), autolyzed yeast, yeast extract, caseinate, and “natural” or artificial flavors.

Avoiding the foods on this list is as simple as reading the ingredients before you add them to your basket.     Very pithy article! I am already doing most of this plus vegetarian and following a food list for Blood Type A. I want to try some gluten-free baking in a book by Rebecca Reilly. Her recipes look delicious plus practical, with lists of possible substitute ingredients and variations. My mom had Alzheimer’s, and it might be partly owing to use of MSG. I don’t think she knew to avoid it. I am low-income now, and I find that eating “well” doesn’t cost more. It only takes more time, i.e., cooking and freezing those black beans instead of buying the cans. Oatmeal may be boring, but feeling great is quite wonderful!

    Overall I really agreed with this article until I got to the last one about water in plastic bottles. I just read an article on Johns Hopkins website written by Lynn R. Goldman, MD, MPH, professor in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Environmental Health Sciences, and Kellogg Schwab, PhD, associate professor and director of the School’s Center for Water and Health. This article states that most American drink bottles do not contain BPA, but some of the reusable polycarbonate drink bottles do. You should avoid using polycarbonate bottles that have the recycling code “7” on the bottom. There are huge amounts of emails going around about the dangers of drinking from plastic bottles, and one of these referred to research done at Johns Hopkins. I looked that up several years ago, and at the time Johns Hopkins had done no research on the subject at all. You cannot believe most emails that get forwarded to you when it concerns either health or nutrition. Anytime I get one, I check it out on first and a general research on the web second. There are people out there that make up supposedly informative emails about multiple subjects, and they get forwarded by well meaning people all over the world. One I received advised us to force ourselves to cough if we start to have a heart attack. Not only is this not recommended, it could also be very dangerous and life threatening.     @Murlin54- making milk at home is super easy if you have about 5-10 minutes (post soaking time) and a decent blender. Basic recipe linked below, google for different versions….brazil nut is the best ever!

    I use 7 cups water instead of the 3 it reccomendes – three is so not worth the time. 🙂

    I liked this list but I would make a few modifications: I have found alternative milk without the carrageenan. I do love to make it myself but as a busy single mom with 4 kids I have to choose my battles. I would have added refined salt to this list. Of course, the refined salt is in the processed foods, but I still see people baking homemade gluten-free goodies with Morton’s salt and it horrifies me. Also, some cans are BPA-free so not ALL canned food has to be avoided.
