Everyone knows about medical marijuana, and most people have heard of THC, the primary active ingredient in cannabis. Cannabinoid, another highly therapeutic compound, is now gaining interest because unlike THC, it does not produce a psychoactive high.

Even among the traditional medical community, CBD research suggests it promotes healthy organs, joints and a healthy immune system. It’s an exciting and emerging field, so larger scale clinical trials are being done right now. Remember that just as with any other medicine or supplement, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for everyone.

1. CBD is a compound found in cannabis (aka marijuana).

CBD stands for cannabidiol, one of over 60 active compounds known as cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Some people think CBD has more medicinal benefits than any other compound (including the more widely known THC).

2. CBD is non-psychoactive (it doesn’t make you high).

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the component mostly responsible for the psychoactive effects (the high) of cannabis. THC and CBD utilize complementary and different pathways to fight inflammation.

3. CBD stimulates the ECS

The human body contains its own endocannabinoid system (ECS), which houses various cannabinoid receptors. The chemical compounds that interact with the ECS support memory, mood, brain reward systems, and energy balance. The ECS system has also been found to be beneficial in combating depression, anxiety, increasing appetite, and create feelings of well-being. CBD naturally acts on the ECS system’s signals to increase receptor function and flow, with no psychoactive reactions in the body.

4. CBD supports alertness

Reported studies suggest CBD has the opposite effect of THC. CBD promotes alertness and can boost your energy at low levels.

5. CBD from HEMP is legal

CBD oil extracted from industrial hemp plants is legal in all 50 states. CBD oil extracted from medical marijuana plants is only legal in states where medical marijuana is legal (and the purchaser has a prescription).

As always, any supplements you take are part of a larger healthy lifestyle. If you eat junk food every day, smoke cigarettes, and get no exercise, then even a nightly cocktail of the best herbal medicines won’t cure what ails you. As always, we encourage you eat a healthy diet (based around fruits, vegetables, and whole grains), create personal connections, live mindfully, and move more.
