It is often taken for anti-aging purposes too. Another study showed improved leg strength and function in older, frail women practicing gentle exercise after several months. The exercise alone was far less effective, and women still lost muscle and leg strength in some measurements. 

Black Cohosh

Black cohosh has been popular for many years as a herbal remedy for menopause. It doesn’t just relieve hot flashes and night sweats, but research shows that the herb can relieve depression too. Over three months, a group of 40 women experienced an average drop in depression scores from 8.6 to 6.9. While both the before and after scores didn’t even reach the cutoff for mild depression, it still suggests an improvement in mood. 

Besides its potential phytoestrogenic effect, black cohosh may increase levels of serotonin and dopamine. Other benefits of black cohosh include improving sleep, reducing inflammation, and relieving PMS as part of a comprehensive herbal formula.
