How do you spot unhealthy foods? Doing so is hardly easy. Take, for instance, that lean, protein-rich fish you were planning to bake tonight: While international government bodies continue to claim fish farming is the future, toxins in farmed fish, such as parasites, remain overlooked. The “future,” then, is more about capitalistic opportunity, as fisheries strive to meet the worldwide demands of a growing global population. And this future has no correlation with increased health.
According to the Pure Salmon Campaign, “Salmon farms harbor two especially virulent parasites: sea lice and kudoa (soft-flesh syndrome). Sea lice infestations have been reported by operators in Canada, Norway, Scotland, and Ireland. Sea lice chew on salmon, creating open lesions that weaken fishes’ ability to maintain a healthy salt-to-water balance. A recent study found that sea lice concentrations at one Canadian salmon farm were 30,000 times higher than normal. Lice are dispersed around a farm at concentrations 73 times higher than normally occurring levels. They spread easily to migrating juvenile wild salmon.”
