Opening up a Pandora’s box on food processing sounds hazardous to say the least, but that’s exactly what author Melanie Warner did with her book, Pandora’s Lunchbox. Warner spent more than a year exploring how food is “processed” and the secrets are out!

Ever wondered why Pop-Tarts® are not considered ‘processed foods” while hummus and baby carrots are? Or how about what the term, “processed” even means? The book offers mind-blowing realities to the food industry’s labyrinth of tricks. For example,  food makers don’t have to speak to the FDA when dealing with the controversial substances known as “Generally Recognized as Safe” or GRAS.

According to Warner, “it’s perfectly legal for companies to keep the FDA in the dark about new additives, and consequently there are some 1,000 ingredients the FDA has no knowledge of whatsoever, according to an estimate done by the Pew Research Center.”

So what’s going into the food and how is it being made? Find out more, here.
