What is royal jelly used for? In addition to previous research linking royal jelly and fertility, a new study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology ties royal jelly consumption to improved spatial memory and concentration.

Royal Jelly May Be Used For Preserving Memory Lane
The Medical University of Warsaw study focused specifically on how Greek royal jelly affected the memory and concentration of brain neurotransmitters in older Wistar rats. Over a two-month period, researchers fed two groups of 18-month-old male rats 50 milligrams and 100 milligrams, respectively, of powdered royal jelly; a third, control group received no royal jelly.
Scientists then assessed the rats’ performance in a Morris water maze and found the rats fed 50 milligrams of royal jelly displayed a statistically significant improvement over other groups in their ability to locate the maze’s hidden platform.
A Morris water maze is a standard behavioral-neuroscience test in which rodent subjects are placed in a pool of water where they must find a submerged platform using spatial memory alone.

Based on the results of their research, the study’s co-authors suggested royal jelly could be a viable, “non-toxic, natural” treatment for human memory disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.
“Our results contribute toward validation of the traditional use of (royal jelly) in promoting a better quality of life in old age,” the researchers wrote, referring to the longstanding use of royal jelly in European and Asian folk medicine as a memory curative for the elderly.
